In 2003, the company was acquired by eHelp Corporation who owned a competing product called RoboDemo (now called Adobe Captivate). eHelp Corporation released an updated version as CamStudio 2.1 under a proprietary software license only and removed the ability to create SWFs. A succession of acquisitions led to the company being owned by Adobe.

There are normally guests either over Skype or in person. The first guest was Jon Udell, a Microsoft Evangelist and long-time screencaster who helped come up with the term screencasting. Camtasia 9.0.0 was released on 11 October 2016, updated until v9.1.2 of 13 March 2018, with later bugfix versions up to v9.1.5 of 7 May, 2019. Later versions are named for the year, with Camtasia 2018.0.0 released on 19 June 2018 and updated until 2018.0.8 of 7 May 2019, and Camtasia 2019.0.0 released on 30 April 2019.
